Young People and Children 1st (Registered Charity Number: 1157870) was formerly known as Children 1st West Berkshire (Charity No. 1126749). The charity . Both. . supports children and young people age 16 -25 who have been in care, or are homeless, in West Berkshire. Care leavers take priority and we will keep up to the age of 25 in exceptional circumstances.
We provide accommodation in our five bedroom house, Cornerstone and a one-to-one individual skills programme tailored to the needs of each young person e.g. budget cooking, money management, communication skills, interview skills, literacy. A Live-In House Supervisor acts as an 'aunty'-type figure. A support worker provides practical & emotional support, whilst a Volunteer Co-ordinator manages our large team of dedicated volunteers who bring specialist skills, expertise & experience to our charity.
Our expectation is that the young people will return to education, volunteer within the community or find work. Our long-term aim is to make them mature, confident & fully independent adults.
The young people must want to work, have ambition, be prepared to fully engage in any training that is on offer and have a strong desire to make the best of their abilities. We believe that every young person, whatever their start in life, can achieve their dreams with the right skills and support.
A resident writes: 'The staff at the Charity are absolutely brilliant, they don’t act like a parent, but a good friend who you can always talk to and they understand you, which is great.
The support us residents get at Cornerstone is beyond fantastic.'
