WELCOMEChildren 1st West Berkshire supports children and young people who have been in care, or those who find themselves homeless for any number of reasons, in West Berkshire. Care leavers always take priority for places. Our target age is 16 to 21 but we will support up to the age of 25 in exceptional circumstances.
CORNERSTONE is where our young people live. Purchased by Greenham Common Trust in 2010, it is rented by us. The house is in a quiet, residential area of Thatcham, Berkshire. It has five bedrooms: four for young people, and one for a live-in adult mentor. Young people can apply to the Cornerstone Programme at any time. When a vacancy arises, we interview potential residents, identify their individual needs and consider how we might address them. It is a pre-requisite that all young people at Cornerstone have a desire to work or get involved in education and be prepared to fully engage in any training that is on offer. They have to want to work, have ambition and a desire to make the best of their abilities. On entry to the programme, we offer a variety of life skills training such as money management, budget cooking, literacy etc. Our expectation is that they will either return to education, volunteer within the community or find work. By providing a stable living environment, augmented with individually tailored one-to-one support, all our young people can progress and begin to achieve their ambitions. We believe that every young person, whatever their start in life, can achieve their dreams with the right skills and support.
